On the weekend of the 14th and 15th April 2012, Kannada Balaga U.K celebrated a very successful Ugadi at Birmingham. This two day festival had a flavour of Karnataka all around starting with Ganapathi puja conducted in a very traditional way to mark the start of the festivities.
The programme started with AGM. President Mrs.Surenu Jayaram welcomed all assembled to the AGM and various reports were shared with members. Motions put to AGM really brought the adrenaline into the members of KBUK as they were debated. The AGM concluded at 1300 which was followed by lunch.
Inauguration commenced with welcome dance “Rhydun” by Anjali dance group. Mr Geerenavar welcomed all to the festivities which was followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp. KBUK president welcomed Golden Star Ganesh and Shri Krishnamurthy Kikkeri on to the stage. After facilitating the chief guest, cultural and entertainment programmes commenced.
Shri Krishnamurthy Kikkeri entertained the audience to various folklore and cultural music accompanied by Rainbow Raagas which was well received by the appreciative audience. A unique performance was put up by the Solihull Kannada families called “Kannada Kanmanigalu” which portrayed the achievement over the years of various eminent people of Karnataka. This spell-binding performance received a standing applause for the quality and message it conveyed. This was followed by excellent Naada Devige Namana dance choreography by Smt Chitralekha Bolar & Kusuma Venugopal.
Golden Star Ganesh entertained audience with Onde Ondu Kshana and regional cultural completion kicked off with 6 different teams putting up very high quality superb shows that stunned the audience. A sit down dinner and live band by Shruti Laya & Rainbow Raagas concluded the first day of events.
Day two started with an early breakfast which was followed by Natya Aerobics. This kicked started the day off to a flying start. The tempo set was followed up by Solihull Kannada families putting up a humorous dance called Kannada FM TOP 10. This was followed by the much awaited Sugama Sangeetha by Shri Krishnamurthy Kikkeri & Comedy Time by Golden Star Ganesh. Kannada Balaga ‘Sandesha & Kannada Library’ team presented a report on the activities that were carried out over the last year. The amount of effort put in by the team was applauded & efforts were recognised. KBUK’s Kannada Kali programme success story was shared and support available was communicated. Members were encouraged to start many more centres across the country. Local talents from across the country kept audience entertained till the end of the day concluding day two celebrations.
Kannada Balaga UK successfully celebrated its Deepavali function on 5th and 6th November 2011. Hundreds of audience enjoyed the two days event at Bolton. For this event the chief guests were the President of the Kannada Development Authority, Government of Karnataka Mr. Mukhyamantri Chandru, famous Kannada actor and director Mr. Ramesh Aravind and the famous entertainer Mr. Murali Kaushik of Kagga Magic...., The popular Gentleman Star Ramesh Arvind showed a video depicting the progress of Kannada films in the past 75 years. He not only won the hearts of everyone, but also he easily mixed with his fans and audience and resided in the hearts and cameras of the youngsters. Magician Muralidhara Kaushik's art was a different kind of hypnosis. The famous Kannada poet D.V.Gundappa's language might be a difficult 'knot' for some to solve, His 'MankuTimmana Kagga' knot was easily undone by Kaushik's magic and explanation. Kannada Balaga U.K celebrated the Ugadi function on 9th April 2011 in Cardiff City in South Wales. The celebration was a great success and all the programmes ran like a clock work. The chief guest was Shri Japananda Swamiji who performed the pooja and welcomed the New Year. President of Kannada Balaga UK Smt. Surenu Jayaram invited Swami Japananda Swamiji to preside over the function. Dr. Mohan Arkanath, the secretary and Dr. Mutthu Puranik the Treasurer were also seated on the stage. The highlight of the programme was the music concert by Smt. Sangeeta Katti-Kulakarni who had come from Karnataka and performed a brilliant rendering of classical North Karnatic music. Purandara Namana was held on Saturday 10 July 2010 at Basingstoke. Artists who took part were Smt. Shruti Sudhir, Dr. Ramya Mohan, Dr. Jyotsna Srikanth and Sri. Bangalore Prakash. Ugadi was celebrated as a two day event on 24th and 25th April 2010 at Stoke on Trent, Staff. This event was entirely organised by our Young Kannadigas and it was called as Yuva Kannadigara Mela. Ten golfers from England , Scotland and Wales took to the fairways at Sherdley Park Golf Course St. Helens, for the inaugural competition of Kannada Balaga Golf Society on Saturday 18 July 2009. Please read the report.
An Audience with Prof. A.R. Mithra: Kannada Balaga members were treated to an hour long audience with Prof. A.R.Mithra on Sunday the 19 July 2009 at the Christ Church Hall, Didsbury. Taking advantage of his brief visit to the UK this programme was organised by Dr Bhanumathi in a hurry. But this did not detract the audience from enjoying Prof. Mithra's informative and educational talk quoting freely from Classic Kannada Literature and filled with generous helpings of humour. A recent recipient of Karnataka Sahitya Academy Prof. Mithra never ceases to amaze his audience with his depth of knowledge and ready wit.
Noted film director Girish kasaravalli was in London on 09.Oct.2009. Shri Girish Kasaravalli was awarded 'Excellence in Cinema Award 2009' by the South Asian Cinema Foundation (SACF) on Friday 09th of October here at the Nehru Centre in Mayfair, London. It was a memorable evening chaired by Farukh Dhondy and graced by the High Commissioner of India H.E. Mr. Nalin Surie. After receiving the award, Shri Girish Kasaravalli engaged in an on-stage conversation with the film critique Shri Lalit Mohan Joshi. Many Kannada Balaga members including Rama Murthy, Anupama Ginimav, Roopasi Bhajanehatti and Sumanth Channapatna were present to honour him at Nehru Centre London. They briefed him about the activities of Kannada Balaga U.K and made a presentation to Shri Girish Kasaravalli on his achievements.
